Exam administrators using Speedwell’s exam software can now choose to run their OSCE assessments online, offline or on paper.  Whilst paper and online OSCEs have been available for some time, the launch of iOS (iPads) and Android apps to manage digital OSCEs offline gives administrators at medical schools and Royal Colleges another opportunity to streamline their operations and reduce costs.

OSCEs by their nature are logistically and financially challenging. Traditionally OSCE administrators have been restricted to running paper OSCEs in areas with poor wifi or no network connectivity.  Now administrators can select to run OSCE exams offline using an app – meaning that medical schools and other departments can get all the benefits of an end-to-end exam software solution that allows them to run eOSCEs wherever they need to.

Running offline OSCEs is simple. Assessors enter the candidate results at each station into an app and the responses are uploaded next time the tablet is online. Furthermore, administrators have the freedom to run the eOSCEs on either Android tablets or iPads.

Rob Dear, Joint CEO of Speedwell, says, “We know how important it is to give our customers the flexibility to run OSCE assessments in a way that suits them best. That is why we have invested in developing both iOS and Android apps, in addition to online and paper OSCE functionality. We know that the Android app will have a particular appeal to schools and institutions that are attracted to these tablets for their lower price point.”

To further strengthen our OSCE offering, in 2022 we developed and  launched a remote OSCE module. Available as an additional add on, this module has integrated video technology which allows practical exams to be run remotely from any location. This could prove invaluable alternative to in-person exams for example if time, travel or cost constraints are making running a physical OSCE assessment prohibitive.
